The flats, which will be built on Salford Quays if the proposal is accepted, will replace what is currently a car park for use by staff at BUPA, and visitors to the healthcare company’s site. Tokenhouse Developments, a part of the Peel Group, has stated that the new residential flats will help to stimulate ‘the burgeoning student economy’ by providing students with a living area in the shadow of the University’s Arts and Media centre.

As part of the proposal, the car park utilised by BUPA would be moved to another site owned by the Peel Group within the same area around King William Street.

The new student blocks would reportedly consist of two towers, eight and twelve stories high, containing a mix of studios and two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments.

The planning documents cite the fact that MediaCityUK is a key media hub within the country, with a number of educational and training establishments in situ. Despite this, there are as yet no dedicated student residential apartments within Salford Quays.

However, it should be noted that Salford University is already set to open a 1,400 bed block of student accommodation in the vicinity of nearby Peel Park, at a cost of £81 million, which will include a games room, cinema and leisure centre. University leaders have suggested that the development is part of a two-decade plan.
