George Costigan is the second patron this year, following award-winning writer Sally Wainwright, who became a patron in September 2015. He joins the likes of Glen Baxter, Sir Alan Bowness, Tim Pigott Smith, Sir Ernest Hall and Timothy West as fellow patrons at the much-loved Arts Centre.

Costigan, star of the 1986 hit film Rita, Sue and Bob Too and the recent BAFTA award-winning television drama Happy Valley, said ‘I am flattered to be asked to be a patron of Square Chapel, and very pleased to accept, and hope and intend to be an active patron”.

This announcement follows a sell-out Q&A event, at which Sally Wainwright was quizzed by George Costigan and fellow actor Judy Holt, as well as questions from fans in the audience and via Social Media.

David McQuillan, Director of Square Chapel said: “We are very grateful for the support George has already given us this year and look forward to working together on future projects. We’re thrilled to welcome George Costigan as a patron of Square Chapel as we embark on the next chapter of our journey.”

After ten years of planning work started on the building’s £6.6 million redevelopment project. The capital build will transform the venue by creating a new extension, level access to the main space and improved facilities for everyone who uses the centre. The space will include an intimate 108 seater multi-purpose cinema/studio theatre space for film screenings, performances and workshops; new dressing rooms, improved toilets; a dedicated space for its committed volunteers; and a café-bar. There will also be direct access into the Piece Hall’s new interpretation centre creating a seamless cultural quarter in the heart of Halifax.
